The basics for playing paintball are a marker, mask, hopper, and tank. It also help to have a pod harness and pods to carry extra ammo.
For the mask, make sure it has an anti-fog lens. Everything else depends on what kind of paintball he wants to play.
If he’s going to play in the woods (woodsball), then a Tippmann is an excellent choice, they work great on CO2. If he’s going to play speedball then check out Smart Parts markers. They make decent and inexpensive entry level markers that can be upgraded as needed, they can also be used for woodsball, but they need an electronic loader and should be powered by compressed air. Check out ansgear.com, they have a good variety of gear and good prices.

Good quality for the price i would recommend a Tippmann 98 Custom or the US Army Alpha made by tippmann. The 98 Custom is more upgradeable.
get a tippman A-5 or a BT-4
BT (Ben Tippman) broke off of his dads company (Tippman) and started BT…. Very great guns from both, allways trustworthy
i would get a good mask, JT or better

I think you need to take him to a park and have him play a bit so you both know if it is for him. If it is great then u want a Tippmann or a Spyder to get him started. but i suggest u follow this rule

if u follow this it makes u better and it is lowest price to highest price so u arnt spending a lot on it until u know if he likes it and if he loves it just get him a package that comes with all that stuff
